With the Sandia Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop due east, this section of Montgomery Blvd. seems more rural than urban. Traffic is fairly sparse here and occasionally, one might even see a deer wandering out of the Sandia foothills. The ruggedly beautiful landscape is dotted with sagebrush and prickly pear cactus. The northern area has a semi-rural, light agricultural character and in addition to gardens producing crops primarily for home use, there are numerous horse farms, pastures, and small-scale animal operations.

The private residences in the area are large, typically spaced out by patches of vegetation. These custom-made homes are designed to blend in with the natural environment. Vacant lots also blend with the rest of the neighborhood, leaving no obvious "holes." Homeowners in this neighborhood are required to leave native landscaping in place, so the lawns have quite a bit of character to them. Muted colors and natural materials are typical, although some newer homes reflect the "Scottsdale" design of other urban neighborhoods.
