Central Avenue: 400 East -- Albuquerque

The section of Central between Dartmouth and Richmond is part of the Nob Hill neighborhood. A neighborhood rich in history, Nob Hill is a fascinating blend of roadside architecture designed to appeal to the weary motorist, and storefronts designed to appeal to neighborhood shoppers. When it was still Route 66, the "Mother Road," numerous roadside restaurants, businesses, and motels along this stretch reinforced the east-west axis of Central as Albuquerque's foremost commercial strip. Today, remnants of the glowing neon still remain, garishly festooning the Sunset Car Dealership.

Nob Hill is a mixture of business and residential; many special features and urban amenities within walking distance make the area a highly desirable place to live. In 1949, the city's first branch bank, an extension of the First National Bank, opened its doors at Central and Richmond. The historic Lobo Theater can be found in the middle of this block. The Lobo hosts weekly showings of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and hosts an annual Academy Awards viewing which profits local schools.
