==A History of Masquerade MUSH, 1992-2019==

Masquerade was one of the first Storyteller (White Wolf) MUSHes developed and publicly released. Its initial development began in December, 1992, and it first opened for public roleplaying in April, 1993. Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Masq was an oWoD (Old World of Darkness) MUSH that at one point supported Mortal, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Mortal+, Fae, and even Gypsy.Between 1993 and 1996, Masq closed and reopened a number of times. In 1996, the database corrupted and after a project that successfully reduced the db size, the game transferred to a new server. Masq was then stable for a number of years, with Diablerie serving as god of the game. During that time, Augury was known as Kuyan and staffed as Mage / Vampire Wizard and Site Admin. Eventually, she took over from Diablerie as god of Masq. In 2001, there was another database transfer / partial reboot, at which point Masq got a brand new grid. Existing characters were ported also and the timeline remained the same. The time period between 2000-2005 was an especially great and active time on Masq. To quote a former player, "Damn near twenty years later [we] still basically compare all roleplay to the standard of how Masquerade was in the early 2000s." By late 2005, the playerbase had begun to dwindle, and a massive db crash nearly resulted in the game's deletion. Although an older backup was reinstated, the game never fully recovered. In January, 2007, Kuyan made the decision to shut Masq down due to continued declining player interest and lack of staff support. The Masq bboard was enabled at forums.masq.org, where players could stay connected. In February, 2010, Masq reopened! It was a fresh start for the game. While the grid remained the same, all previous characters were wiped and the timeline was reset. The game system was converted to WoD Revised and all code/news files were updated accordingly. This Wiki was also created in 2010 and grew steadily, with staff and player contributions alike. Character types on the new Masq were limited to Mortal, Sorcerer, Psychic, Shifter, and Vampire. For this reboot, Kuyan changed her name to Augury and continued on as God / Site Admin / Chief Storyteller. Until about 2016, Masq enjoyed a second Golden Age of RP. Players and staffers came and went, but Augury remained the driving force behind the game. She approved almost every character application personally, and ran numerous global plots. Beyond that, she encouraged players to run their own PRPs and supported them every step of the way.
Things began to slow down on Masq in 2017 due to various factors, but Augury still tried to keep things going. Earlier in 2019, Augury put the game on hiatus. She passed away on November 27, 2019. A few weeks later, the server hosting the game (and this Wiki) briefly crashed, resulting in Masq's shutdown.This shutdown will remain permanent. Without Augury, there can be no Masquerade MUSH. She was the beautiful heart and stalwart spirit of Masq, and will always remain so.

William Thorn is the scion of a wealthy family. He ran for Mayor on the platform of not needing business interests. Although multiple business lobbyists moved against him, they were unable to stop the wellspring of support gained from the people of the city, and he was elected Mayor. His platform included protecting the natural splendor of the surrounds of the city, as well as bringing an unspoiled hand to the reigns of the politics of the town. Time will tell if he fulfills his promise, or is swallowed by the darkness that surrounds all good intentions.

Green eyes rimmed in dark liner and a winning smile, framed by an unnaturally dark, bang-less bob, are the most notable features of this young woman. Her clothing choices are casually stylish but not overstated, with patterned elephant stretch pants, an "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" ringer tee, and an oversized grey hoodie with cream sherpa lining. Her Doc Martens betray either keen shopping sense, or a fair amount of disposable cash, as they are newish, covered with Renaissance images most likely originally created by Giannicola Di Paolo, which portray the archangel Gabriel handing a lily to the Virgin Mary. Her jewelry is simple but quality, with gold hoops and small diamond studs in her double-pierced ears, a heart floating on a sturdy gold chain, and a gold band on her right ring finger that holds an oval amethyst cabochon. None of it is terribly expensive - like the sort of jewelry doting parents might give to a beloved teenaged daughter. Everything about her screams upper-middle class privilege.

'' Standing at five foot nine inches and looking to weigh around a hundred and seventy five pounds, this man in appears to be in his mid to late thirties. His posture is generally above average, usually standing tall and proud but sometimes the occasional slump is seen, as if the weight of some burden periodically weighs him down. His body is athletically cut. It's clearly apparent he maintains his body through exercise. His eyes, a steel blue, shine with intellect and empathy. Hir is a slender young man, very tall and wiry with tan skin. He has wavy red-brown hair that has gotten long and messy, and teal-grey eyes that are wide and expressive. His hands are always cold, and his face is always lost in thought and troubled, but his smile, though it is growing rarer, is always warm.

Hir's style in clothing strikes a good balance between classy and casual, leaning just a bit into eccentrically colorful. Whether his taste is fashionably creative or just weird is debatable. Hir has a special liking for purple.

Hir keeps a pretty bracelet of painted wooden beads on his wrist at all times; he never takes it off, and he scratches and twists it as a nervous habit.

Hir gestures a lot as he speaks, sometimes dramatically, and he tends to have a stutter. When he can collect himself enough to speak smoothly though, he has the voice of an angel and would be well suited to singing or theater. Hir is a skillful linguist and can pronounce just about any normal human language with practice, though he only knows spanish and french at the moment.

He walks with grace and purpose as long as he knows where he’s going, and despite his consistent nerves he has good posture and doesn’t slouch too often. His presence in a room isn't hard to miss even when he's ''not'' pushing into the spotlight. Hir is a pretty guy who clearly likes attention.
