From Masq
Table
New Discipline (Any Clan) base cost: 10 xp
Disciplines In-Clan base cost: current rating x 5, up to Gen BG+1 score, then see below
Disciplines Out-of-Clan base cost: current rating x 7, up to Gen BG+1 score, then see below
Caitiff (Any Disciplines) base cost: current rating x 6, up to Gen BG+1 score, then see below
Characters can learn up to their Generation background dots +1 in a Discipline for regular XP. Once they surpass the Gen+1 score, XP base cost is doubled. Once they surpass twice (2x) their Gen+1 score, XP base costs are tripled.

More simply, if new Discipline score > Gen dots +1 = base cost x2
If new Discipline score > (Gen dots +1) x2 = base cost x3

Since math is hard, included is a complete table!
  • Gen 13 (0 dots): Gen + 1 = 1, (Gen + 1) x 2 = 2

Dot 1 = 10
Dot 2 = Base Cost x2
Dot 3 = Base Cost x3
Dot 4 = Base Cost x3
Dot 5 = Base Cost x3

  • Gen 12 (1 Dot): Gen + 1 = 2, (Gen + 1) x 2 = 4

Dot 1 = 10
Dot 2 = Base Cost
Dot 3 = Base Cost x2
Dot 4 = Base Cost x2
Dot 5 = Base Cost x3

  • Gen 11 (2 Dots): (Gen + 1) = 3, (gen +1) x 2 = 6

Dot 1 = 10
Dot 2 = Base Cost
Dot 3 = Base Cost
Dot 4 = Base Cost x2
Dot 5 = Base Cost x2

Example

An 12th generation Malkavian with 1 Dot in Generation is buying Dementation.

  • Dementation 1 costs: 10XP.
  • Dementation 2 costs: Current level (1) x In-clan cost (5) = 5XP.

Now they want Dementation 3. Since 3 is greater than Generation Dots +1 (1+1=2) -- cost is doubled. So,
  • Dementia 3 costs: Current level (2) x In-clan cost (5) x2 = 20XP.

Dementation 4 also costs them double so,
  • Dementia 4 costs: Current level (3) x In-clan cost (5) x2 = 30XP

Now they want Dementatia 5. The desired level (5) is more than twice the value of Generation Dots + 1. That is to say that 5 is greater than: (Gen+1) x2 = (1+1) x2 = 4. 5 is greater than 4. So it will cost them 3x as much, instead of 2x as much. So,
  • Dementia 5 cost: Current level (4) x In-clan cost (5) x3 = 60XP

When in doubt you can ask staff or use the +xpcost <discipline>=<level> to help you figure out the costs.
