The sprawling complex of the Hospital of the University of New Mexico dominates this entire area. Parking structures for the hospital are clustered on the south side of the street, while ambulances rush in toward the Emergency Room to the north. There are a few cafe-type eateries in the area, typically filled with harried students and doctor-types.

University Hospital is part of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. It is the primary teaching hospital for the UNM School of Medicine and is also the home of the highly regarded Children's Hospital of New Mexico. Although it has recently had some budget problems, University Hospital is ranked among the top ten academic centers in the nation. Architecturally, the structures are aesthetically pleasing, surrounded by trees and landscaping which belie their urban setting.
