Description

The neighborhoods around the University of New Mexico are collectively known as Near Heights -- quiet and stable, they provide a sense of intimacy and human scale. Few towering commercial buildings or massive apartment houses dwarf their residential neighbors. Traffic on University thins out compared to Central Avenue, but is still fairly heavy. Numerous shops and restaurants on the west side of the street seem to be thriving.

To the east is Campus Drive, known as the Las Lomas entrance onto the central campus of the University of New Mexico. UNM is the state's largest university, with more than 30,000 students on five campuses; it offers nationally ranked academics, exceptional research, recognized athletics and an architecturally unique campus. The Visitor Center and various campus buildings are visible just beyond the entrance.
